About the Texas Discovery Gardens

Texas Discovery GardensFounded in 1936, Texas Discovery Gardens is a non-profit native garden and butterfly house in Dallas, Texas. As a little slice of nature in Dallas, they hope their visitors will leave with the desire to emulate their natural practices at home. Their mission? To be the haven where children and children-at-heart learn about the natural world.

The garden is spread out across 7.5 acres of beautiful native gardens, a 2-story tropical butterfly house, and a native Texas snake exhibit. As part of their commitment to preserving nature in all its beauty, they maintain the gardens sustainably with methods that conserve water and help to protect the environment.

Things to Do at Texas Discovery Gardens

This little slice of nature offers a plethora of ways to get involved and explore. They’re open to the public Wednesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., so bring your spouse, children, or closest friends for an afternoon among the butterflies!

For more organized fun, they host groups, including:

  • Field trips
  • Scout programs
  • Children’s birthday parties
  • Garden club meetings
  • Weddings

They also host events and exhibits throughout the year, which are lead by resident experts in horticulture and entomology.

The Butterfly House

Do you want to experience something magical? Step into the 2-story tropical butterfly house! Explore the native habitats of tropical butterflies as you stroll through the house and watch the butterflies dance around you. Along the way, you’ll be introduced to myriad tropic plants, too.

Be sure to stop by the Emergence Chamber to examine butterfly chrysalises and moth cocoons and maybe even catch one emerging. Then, visit the Honeybee Tree to learn more about the job of each bee and see the queen surrounded by her court.

If you have a special occasion to celebrate or a deceased loved one to honor, you can also schedule a butterfly release.
