Community Spotlight: Patriot PAWS
About the Organization
Patriot PAWS Service Dogs is a 501(c)(3) organization that specializes in providing service dogs to disabled veterans. Every dog is specially trained in order to meet the needs of the veteran they will be assigned to, with the main objective to increase the veteran’s independence and provide a higher quality of life.
The service dogs are specially trained to handle both visible and invisible disabilities. While it usually takes about two and a half years and a hefty sum to train a single dog, the program is completely free to veterans because Patriot PAWS understands the immeasurable service veterans provide, and the organization believes in giving back in any way that it can.
Their campus was recently relocated in 2017 to include an indoor and outdoor kennel facility in order to increase their capacity.
Programs Offered
Patriot PAWS offers a prison program for inmates where they not only gain a new companion but will also learn how to train service dogs that they can utilize as a means for employment once they get released and rehabilitated. Working with certified dog trainers, the inmates are taught how to train service dogs using required animal behavioral techniques. Highly sought after, the inmates are tested on a quarterly basis that helps to determine their ability to train dogs in 55 behavioral techniques needed for certification. Inmates that become more advanced also have the opportunity to become mentors for new inmates entering the program.
For anyone wanting to help Patriot PAWS while also befriending an adorable puppy in the process, the organization offers a full-time as well as a weekend puppy raiser program. If you opt to volunteer your time and service, some requirements include: having a safe and healthy environment where the puppy will be loved, teaching the dog good manners, exercising and training the puppy on a daily basis, having a fenced-in yard, undergoing monthly reports provided by the trainers, attendance at training classes at least twice a month, and being at least 18 years of age.
Another program they offer is Patriot PAWS of Aggieland, an adjacent program that works closely with Patriot PAWS. Patriot PAWS Service Dogs is a student-led 501 (c) (3) organization and a certified member of Assistance Dogs International (ADI), providing services to disabled veterans such as: recognizing and preventing PTSD episodes, opening and closing doors, providing help in medical emergencies, pulling wheelchairs, helping with daily chores, and much more.
Additionally, in conjunction with and outside the program, there are many ways that people can get involved either through donating their time and services or by donations.
